Our survey, in partnership with Norman Broadbent and delivered with YouGov, looks at NED recruitment, retainment and reward.
Based on responses from 128 company directors, we found that NED pay is considered too low, and that a significant proportion of respondents found their most recent experience of recruiting a NED challenging. One of the main reasons that companies cited for this was that a lack of appropriate skills are considered a barrier for recruiting the right NED talent.
Some of the headline findings include:
- 66% of companies used a search firm when recruiting NEDs;
- 26% of company directors found their most recent experience of finding a NED for their company board challenging;
- 62% of respondents cited a ‘lack of appropriate skills’ as a barrier to NED recruitment; and
- 54% of company directors felt that NED pay was currently too low.

It was great to share our findings at Breakfast with Norman Broadbent and hosted by Cavendish.
We heard from an exceptional panel who provided valuable analysis of our NED Survey findings, discussing critical topics including NED recruitment strategies, board diversity and the required skill sets, and the importance of fresh perspectives, particularly in technology such as AI and cybersecurity.
