The QCA’s State of the Small and Mid-cap Sector report follows from the Chancellor’s recent ‘State of the Sector’ Report to the House of Commons. As its name suggests, this report is focussed on the UK public markets as they apply to small and mid-cap companies who together make up 91 % of all listed companies and employ over 2.1 million people. They are also exceptionally capable of driving dynamic innovation and rapid growth and therefore, if the UK capital markets are to prosper and grow, they need to cater for and be attractive to this sector.

In this report we will look at why the markets are failing this critically important community, what steps are being taken to ‘fix’ the problems and what further steps should be taken in this regard.

This report consists of four parts:

  • a quantitative analysis of the state of the UK’s primary and secondary markets and a look at the social benefits of public equity;
  • a qualitative examination of the key issues relevant to companies, investors and other stakeholders;
  • a broad summary of the key regulatory changes and developments within the sector and our commentary on those changes and developments; and
  • our suggestions for the further improvement and enhancement of our public markets to attract small and mid-cap companies.
